The Fountain of Abundance

Buffalo World's Fair - 1901

the fountain of abundance, buffalo world's fair 1901At the opposite end of the court of fountains stood the fountain of abundance, which had been sculpted by Philip Martiny. It was an elaborate fountain that depicted the Goddess of Abundance atop a pedestal, which was supported by a group of dancing children, beneath which cupids range of flowers down onto playful boys and girls riding snails and swans. In reflection of a central theme of the exposition, the fountain of abundance highlighted the use of electrical power through the use of rows of lamps set around the base, shining powerful and dramatic light through the water. Both the Louisiana Purchase Centennial international exposition in St. Louis in 1904, and the Panama Pacific international exposition of 1915 in San Francisco, continued the theme of well rehearsed fountains, adding to the growing fascination of public fountains by the general public. In the literature of the time a new approach to urban planning, called the City Beautiful Movement, was inspired in part by the success of fountains at these world expositions.
