Fountains of the Rising Sun, Setting Sun, and Energy

1915 San Francisco Exhibition

fountain of the rising sunCreated by Adolph Alexander Weinmann, the fountains of the rising and the setting sun marked the east-west axis and stood between the Column of Progress slick and the Tower of Jewels. In the center of this arrangement of fountains stood the Fountain of Energy, designed by Alexander Stirling Calder. It was remarked at the time that the fountain of energy was a circle of figures and statues, representing the dance of the water of all the world's oceans. Atop this grand water fountain was the figure of energy, upon whose shoulder carried statues of victory and fame. The figure of energy, perched upon the fountain, was depicted on horseback, conveying the qualities of force and dominance that had ripped a path across the continental divide the commerce of the world. Other fountains of importance on the grounds of the 1915 San Francisco exhibition were the Fountains of El Dorado by Gertrude Whitney, and the Four Fountains in the Court of Seasons by Furio Piccirilli.
