Considering All Aspects
Practical Considerations
Possibly one of the first questions that everyone asks in planning an outdoor living room is, "What will it cost?" It is obvious that no two developments will cost the same. The cost of each will be influenced by the size of the space improved, the plant material used and the character of the features and furnishings. The important point to realize is that it is possible to develop an average-sized garden room along simple lines for very little expense. With a set plan, it is possible to accomplish a certain part each year and ultimately achieve the outdoor living room just as we would like it.
With this idea in mind, a good first year would be planting trees and shrubs and establishing the lawn. With this much accomplished, the outdoor living room at least takes form and, with a few inexpensive furnishings, can be enjoyed the first season. It is a good idea to remember that trees, shrubs, and evergreens increase in value from year to year. For this reason, it is a good idea to plant trees, shrubs, and evergreens as soon as possible so that they immediately begin growing, compounding their value and beauty year after year.
A second year's program might ideally include the addition of evergreens which were not possible in the beginning, perennial flowers or other border flowers, steps and walks, if any, and perhaps a few more permanent furnishings.
The third year should see the further development of trees and plants. The outdoor living room will begin to reveal its real charms. This is a good time to add the special features such as a pool, shelters, paved terrace retaining wall, or any other architectural feature necessary for the satisfactory completion of the plan.
Also in the third year, unless one can crowd all these interesting steps into one, there is time to acquire some beautiful outdoor furnishings for permanent use. With the background completed, it is possible then to pick up occasional pieces -- jars, vases, benches or any other types of furnishings and decorations that will make your outdoor room truly livable if tastefully selected and pleasingly placed. In fact, the outdoor living room is never completed. There is always opportunity for change and improvement.
