Picnic: Where in the world does the word come from?
One of the more interesting questions we've received is the origin of the word "Picnic". We all looked at each other and realized we had no idea! So, with a little research, here's what we've come up with so far. It seems the term Picnic was taken from the French, and seems to have first been used at the end of the 17th century. Most likely, picnic is based on the French verb Piquer, which has the same Latin root as the English word Pick. In French, Piquer is to pick or peck. It rhymes with the pronunciation of "nique", which would make sense, as rhyming prose was very popular in France during that era. It seems to have originated as a term for what we would notice as a modern day pot luck, where everyone brings along some food. It wasn't until almost 200 years later that it became synonymous with an outdoor meal. We hope this helps!
