Landscape garden basically comes down to creating fine art. The idea behind creating fine art is to create a unity and harmony out of parts that normally are dissimilar. Landscape art stand on the level of fine arts, and perhaps, may even surpass it.
The art of landscaping is known as landscape architecture. You may also hear this referred to as landscape design or landscape engineering. These terms are most often used by professionals in the field.
Interestingly enough, arguments exist as to which term should be the official term, but they are all still used synonymously today to the average person. Professionals are the main ones who try to differentiate between the terms.
In a simpler time, the word “gardening” was a sufficient description for the job. Especially when it came to creating the garden style that reflects the natural or English method. This would still be the best word to use if it was not so closely associated with growing vegetables.
As a result, with the confusion in terminology, comes the need to further consider the smaller things that make up the principles of landscaping as a fine art.
Understanding the methods and goals of landscape are is important. Good taste in gardening brings pleasure which comes from understanding it, just as good taste in literature and music brings much pleasure when you understand it.
And just as you develop good taste in music and literature without becoming a professor, you can also become good at gardening and landscape art without becoming a landscape gardener.
Gardening art offers many advantages to its gardener, mainly the fact they can pursue and enjoy this hobby wherever they are. This form of art, can also be much less pricey than painting or sculpting. Many people, who have little money, will be able to grow geraniums or marigolds rather easily and inexpensively.
The ability to cultivate and create garden art of some type lies in all of us. It is not strictly limited to art galleries and exhibitions.
The titles of “landscape gardener”, “landscape architect”, “landscape artist”, and “gardener” all reflect the terms mentioned earlier, and no matter what, all are artists. Whether their art is good or bad, they all face the same choices and outcomes if they were sculpting or painting instead.
The new obsession in this age is science, something far removed from art. People spend years trying to relate emotions and activity to science. Many of these people have tried to place gardening on the basis of science. Science may have its place in the commercial production of onions and even roses, but the creation of a stunning landscape is a work of art, not of science. And to understand and make it work, we must be able to differentiate between the two.
