Site Selection:
The location of your pond is important for aesthetic reasons. You want a site that gets at least four hours of direct sunlight each day. Your main consideration should be how to best show off the plants and animal in your pond, and choose a location based on that criteria.
You may also want to consider the following:
- Avoid areas with tree overhanging, this stops water lilies from blooming
- Avoid a site exposed to cold winds
- Make sure to place your pond where it can be easily filled or emptied.
Formal vs. Informal:
You can choose to create either a formal or informal water lily pond. Often formal ponds feature a regular and strict shape. They are very carefully planned out, and have enchanting landscaped features. A pond that has an irregular shape, and seems to be more natural is an informal pond. Be sure to avoid really irregular shapes, because these are certainly not found in nature and will not fit into a formal setting either.
Materials needed for a pool:
A water lily pond can be built out of any strong material that can be sealed. The best material is always reinforced concrete. This is relatively inexpensive to build, and it is sturdy and easy to clean. Slammer pools may consider the use of wooden tanks or tubs. These are easy to install and rather cheap. Make sure the wood has been sufficiently aged, and that any metal exposed is painted with a rubber based paint so it won’t rust. The following are also materials that can be used, but will not be as effective as the concrete:
- Regular Concrete
- Bricks
- Prefabricated pools
